Gurbaksh Chahal dropped out of high school at 16 to become an entrepreneur. Find out how he went from bullied kid to multimillionaire 20-something.

Growing up in gritty East San Jose, California, Gurbaksh Chahal struggled to fit in. Emigrating from India with his family at age 4, he wore a traditional head covering for Sikh children called a patka to school. It was just one cultural difference that his pint-sized peers bullied him about. But instead of succumbing to what he recalls as a "wild, wild west for minorities," Chahal leaned into his close-knit family for the strength that would become his entrepreneurial fuel.

He dropped out of high school at 16, started a business and never looked back.

Fascinated by online advertising and the "concept of a click," Chahal founded ClickAgents in December 1998. Less than two years later, he sold it for $40 million. Staying hungry for growth, he started online advertising network BlueLithium in 2004. Yahoo Inc. bought it within three years for $300 million. The latest entrepreneurial venture for Chahal, now 29, is RadiumOne, a fast-growing ad network that leverages social data on the Web.

In this interview with 'Trep Talk, Chahal's tone is sharp and determined, yet quickly softens when he speaks of family. The serial entrepreneur, who also published a memoir, The Dream (Palgrave Macmillan, 2008), offers insight on staying competitive, making the most of defining moments, and the one thing he changed that shifted his outlook on life. Edited interview excerpts follow.

On breaking free from bullies: My focus was to think: 'OK, I'm not going to have the most friends, be prom king or the most popular student — but so what?' I fell in love with the Internet, with business and the idea of being in control and knowing that my destiny was in my own hands. I became more determined than ever to succeed.

I'm inspired by … my family. When my parents were working, my grandmother was their equivalent. There was a sense of belonging at home, even though at school I was told differently. My grandmother would always comfort me and say it's all going to work out one day. As a kid it made me realize: 'Maybe she's right, maybe it will.' The DNA of having discipline, ambition, making someone else proud and believing in yourself doesn't have to come from business, it can come from nurturing.

Success tip: Don't focus so much energy on what you've lost, focus on what you need to win. There will be times when you may lose $1 million in deals. You'll think it's the end of the world, but the next day you may make $1.2 million. Nothing is meant to always work out. You just need a Plan B.

On staying competitive: Many [business] people focus on what is static, black and white. Yet great algorithms can be rewritten. A business process can be defined better. A business model can be copied. But the speed of execution is dynamic within you and can never be copied. When you have an idea, figure out the pieces you need quickly, go to market, believe in it, and continue to iterate.

Biggest business influence: The best CEO of our time, Steve Jobs, for his vision and mastering the execution of it.

My proudest moment … was seeing the look in my father's eyes when I told him that I sold my second company [for $300 million]. He didn't have to say anything.

On defining moments: You'll probably have two or three really bad days in a year. Those are pivotal points where every decision is instrumental. You have to have a very thick skin and be more focused on solving the problem than worrying about it.

Stress-taming tactic: I disconnect from technology for a weekend, generally once a month. You almost need to so you can think and appreciate what really matters in life — family, friends, your health. I let loved ones know where I am, in case anything happens. But if something does go wrong then I'm not doing my job right, because I should be hiring people who can problem-solve on their own.

Attitude adjuster: When my grandmother passed away I created a slideshow with pictures of her and me. Anytime I need motivation or hit an obstacle, I replay it.

Advice for young 'treps: People still stereotype all day long. But if you forget your own age, you'll get so focused on the business that you become ultra-confident and people will forget to question how old you are.

Biggest challenge: We have 120 amazing [employees] and we're growing fast, so it's about finding the next 120 people who share the same culture. I'm a true believer the assets go home at night — and your assets are your people.

When faced with rejection … embrace it. This will change the entire way you look at life. Whenever someone says they're not interested in working [for me] or buying [from me], it fuels my competitive side. It may not be today or even next year, but I will carefully design a strategy to get a "yes." And when a "yes" fuels you more than the actual deal or opportunity, you can embrace rejection in a much more competitive way.

Favorite book: [Sun Tzu's] The Art of War has a way of broadly looking at life and I've incorporated it into my business philosophy.

If I knew then, what I know now … I would still drop out of high school. (Chuckle.)

Secret quirk: I love Twinkies. I stay away from them as an adult, but I had a love-hate relationship with them as a chubby kid growing up. Last time I had one was three years ago. You can't just have one.

A big turnoff is … when people approach me and say, "I have a million-dollar idea and it's going to be amazing." They think just an idea will make them millions. That's not the way business really works. It's about executing the hell out of your idea — better than anyone else.

What's next: We're launching two massive projects by the end of the year where we'll get closer to the consumer and help make advertising more like information. We're also aggressively expanding internationally. We'll launch in Australia, Canada and France in the fourth quarter. With that, based on the way revenue and profit grows, [RadiumOne] could be on a 12- to 15-month track to an IPO.

Inspector General Releases Report of Massive Fraud by Miracle Place Church in Baker

Today, the State Inspector General’s Office issued a report detailing its investigation into the activities of Ricky Sinclair, the Miracle Place Church of Baker and its affiliated All The Way House drug treatment facility. The investigation revealed that

Mr. Sinclair, acting on behalf of Miracle Place Church and All The Way House, submitted false information to several government agencies in order to access more than $750,000 in public funds. These funds originated from the United States Government and were distributed by various departments of the State of Louisiana which administer payments and reimbursements.

The investigation revealed the following:

• Mr. Sinclair and Miracle Place Church staff at his direction made false statements on official FEMA labor documents, causing an overpayment for expenses related to the operation of a public shelter after Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The false documents that Mr. Sinclair submitted resulted in an approximate overpayment of $81,000 in public funds.

• Mr. Sinclair made false statements on official FEMA documents in an attempt to cause an overpayment of labor, food, and equipment expenses related to the operation of a public shelter after Hurricane Gustav in 2008. Mr. Sinclair’s original Gustav shelter reimbursement claim was $1,700,000. Mayor Harold Rideau of Baker, Louisiana correctly identified most of the original claim as questionable and decreased it accordingly prior to submittal to FEMA.

Even with this reduction, Mr. Sinclair falsely claimed at least $380,108 as Gustav related labor, food and equipment costs that neither he nor Miracle Place Church actually incurred. Inspector General investigators identified the false documents and notified FEMA prior to payment.

• Mr. Sinclair and other All The Way House staff members falsified Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals (DHH) documents related to the All The Way House’s application to become a state funded addiction service provider. Mr. Sinclair, his wife, and at least three other All The Way House staff members concealed criminal convictions during the DHH application process. Mr. and Mrs. Sinclair and All The Way House ultimately received $258,000 in state and federal addiction services funds after having submitted the falsified forms.

• Mr. Sinclair and Miracle Place Church staff at his direction falsified documents claiming that the church had provided teen abortion prevention training through a program called Life Choice Project. They presented these documents for payment to Caring to Love Ministries, a private manager of the publicly funded program. This program is funded by the U.S. Government and administered by the State of Louisiana. Interviews with Miracle Place Church youth pastors and persons listed as having received the training revealed the training was not delivered. The false invoices resulted in Mr. Sinclair’s receiving $31,500 in public funds for work that was not performed.

• Mr. Sinclair exploited All The Way House clients for personal economic gain by using them during the construction of his personal residence. All The Way House clients were forced to perform labor to construct Mr. and Mrs. Sinclair’s personal residence or risk being expelled from the program and the All The Way House facility. For some of these individuals, expulsion from the program could have exposed them to jail for violating court-ordered conditions of bond or probation. The contract associated with the All The Way House, entered into between Miracle Place Church and the State of Louisiana, prohibits contractors from personally benefitting from program participants.

Inspector General Stephen Street said: “This was deliberate and calculated fraud. Mr. Sinclair enriched himself by repeatedly using his church as a front to cheat public agencies out of hundreds of thousands of dollars of taxpayer money. The fact that much of this was done against the backdrop of two natural disasters is particularly reprehensible.”

Inspector General Street added: “I want to thank the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Louisiana State Police, and the FEMA Office of Inspector General for their invaluable assistance with this investigation.”

1 tsp of baking soda

 2 tsp of cinnamon

Bake at 350°F for 11 to 12 minutes, let cool then frost with light vanilla frosting.

3/4 cup powdered sugar

1/4 cup natural sweetener or other sugar alternative for baking

2 tbsp low-fat margarine

1 1/2 tsp fat-free creamer or low-fat milk

1/4 tsp vanilla extract (you can change flavoring if you would like a different taste)

About 8 drops food coloring (for colored frosting)

 

Directions

Add powdered sugar, sugar substitute, margarine, milk and vanilla to a small mixing bowl and beat on medium speed to blend until smooth. This will take a few minutes, because the sugar substitute takes a while to dissolve. Frost cookies and enjoy!

In Louisiana we do not have Guardianship, rather it is called Interdiction. An Interdiction proceeding takes place when a person is alive but unable to transact their own affairs, and they have not previously designated anyone to transact for them with a Durable Power of Attorney. 

A Louisiana Interdiction is somewhat complicated and time-consuming. Because a Judgment of interdiction results in the Interdict losing all rights to conduct his own affairs there are specific rules that must be followed. In general (although some circumstances require additional steps) the rules are these: 

1. A family member (Petitioner) files a Petition for Interdiction.

2. The Petition must state Petitioner's and proposed Interdict's name, domicile, age, and current address, and reasons why interdiction necessary, infirmities of proposed interdict.

3. The Petition must be served on the proposed interdict by the sheriff.

4. Children of the Interdict, and other parties must be notified by certified mail.

5. If the proposed interdict does not hire an attorney and answer the petition within 15 days, the judge must appoint an attorney to represent the proposed interdict.

6. The court-appointed attorney must personally visit the defendant (i.e., the proposed Interdict).

7. The court shall fixed a hearing or trial date.

8. A Judgment signed by the judge must appoint a curator and an undercurator. (Curator is teh court appointed person to manage the affairs of the Interdict). This procedure must be followed even if all parties are in agreement that someone needs to be interdicted.

In December 2006 the Louisiana Legislature enacted Revised Statute 47:6025, which authorized a refundable income tax credit for the LA Citizens assessments that resulted from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. This credit is available to people who paid the LA Citizens assessments in addition to their homeowner’s or property’s insurance premium.

The LA Citizens assessments are a result of losses on insured property caused by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. In years when there are no large catastrophic losses, LA Citizens collects enough premiums to cover their cost of operations. However, the massive losses of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita cost LA Citizens over $1.2 Billion, which created a deficit. LA Citizens assessments on home and property insurance policies in Louisiana were used to partially fund this deficit left by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
